The concept for this work was inspired by music, an ode to Bowie. The parts came together rather differently. The Apollo head resulted from the challenges of learning a new medium, the cracks and brokenness help tell the story. The various pieces hung around my studio for a year+. Ground Control 2 Major Tom are part of my Everyday - Objects - Of Desire series. The everyday elements are the plinth, which is my vision of what a child's building block might have looked like if it were sitting amongst the rubble of the Acropolis, and the broken Beats and flip phone worn by Apollo, aka Ground Control and Major Tom. The everyday bits and the rocky plinth contribute to the narrative.
All of my work is handcrafted by me in my home-based studio in Portland, Oregon. I build the individual molds and then cast each piece before assembling into a final work. Each piece is signed with the CP KATE logo, I also incorporate a small peace sign as it is a symbol that resonates.
This work contains two pieces, Ground Control and Major Tom, each piece is approximately 11"H X 10"W X 10"D and weighs approximately 14 lbs.
