Acquired Taste

Taste is never just about what we consume. It is about who we become.

A historical sovereign wears an extravagant cake-inspired hat crowned with pastel confections, transforming an object of royal ceremony into one of everyday indulgence. Beneath the ornate brim, a hidden layer of gold catches the light—a reminder that luxury often reveals itself in unexpected places.

Part of the Slow Beauty exhibition, Acquired Taste explores the curious relationship between beauty, memory, and cultural inheritance. The small cakes are not presented as luxury goods, but as emotional artifacts—objects capable of carrying childhood rituals, family traditions, and the quiet comforts of ordinary life.

Throughout history, crowns have declared power, lineage, and status. Here, confectionery takes their place, suggesting that the objects we treasure say as much about us as the titles we inherit.

The sculpture asks a deceptively simple question:

What defines good taste?

Is it wealth?

Tradition?

Elegance?

Or are the things that shape us far more ordinary—shared over afternoon tea, remembered long after the last bite is gone, and carried quietly through a lifetime?
