RELIC
What transforms an ordinary object into something worthy of preservation—and ultimately, reverence?
Some objects are preserved because history declares them important. Others quietly become part of our lives until they, too, begin to define a culture.
A crown, a piece of fine porcelain, a treasured heirloom—these are the objects we instinctively protect and pass from one generation to the next. Yet the foods we share, the treats tucked into lunchboxes, the desserts served at celebrations, and the everyday rituals surrounding them often become just as deeply woven into our collective memory.
By gilding an iconic snack cake and presenting it in antique porcelain atop Queen Victoria, Relic questions the hierarchy of cultural preservation. Why do we carefully safeguard crowns, china, and monuments, while overlooking the ordinary objects that quietly shape who we are?
Perhaps the true relics of a culture are not only those reserved behind museum glass, but also the humble things shared around our tables.
